Finished Quilting Jane's Quilt Top

Well I had it long enough....It looks springy and Eastery so glad I can mail it back to her tomorrow :)

So yesterday I made the cake to be entered into the contest and the cake part turned out just as good as the practice cake.

Last night I made the caramel topping.  At one point in the recipe, it says you need to cook 2 cups of sugar and some water until the sugar turns a "dark amber" color.  Well it didn't do that the first time. I know it was because I didn't cook it long enough and I was stirring it too much.

But when I made the second cake, the sugar did turn dark amber.  Great right???? Wrong.  The topping when it was done was like a melting Sugar Daddy lollypop. I don't know if they make them anymore.  I had all I could do to pour it on the cake without it hardening mid air.  The pan I cooked it in may never be the same again.  Then I went to bed.  Got up early today to take it to the contest and...........it's hard as a rock.  Now I know why they say "serve warm".

The recipe is awesome but you have to serve it right away.  So if you make it according to the directions, make sure you have 6 to 8 of your dearest friends around to eat it up right away.  If you need to make the cake ahead of time, make it as the recipe says but don't cook the sugar and water until it turns "dark amber".  Get it off the stove sooner.  Here was the cake that didn't make it into the contest.  The top was hard as a rock.  Oh well there's always next year and this cake gave more than a few people a good laugh :)



Boston Bruins Socks and St. Paddy's Day Socks


Finally sat myself down yesterday to finish these two pairs off socks.  I hate grafting the toe seams.  Every time I do it, I have to google a tutorial on kitchener stitch.  I'm close to having two more pairs done.  One is mauve and blue and the other is one where I dyed the yarn myself in a yarn dyeing workshop.  Considering I didn't know what I was doing, it turned out pretty good.  Pictures soon.  

The socks below were generated with Sock Wizard software.  The company went out of business a couple of years ago.  I think the lady retired but you might still be able to find the software on Ebay or Etsy or someplace like that.

Irish Baking Contest

I'm entering an Irish Baking Contest on Wednesday.  So today I went searching for a recipe.  Wanted something a little more difficult than boring old Irish Soda Bread.  Well I found one.  It was a bit work intensive.  Here is the link to the recipe I used:  Irish Apple Cake with Irish Whiskey Caramel Sauce.  You are suppose to serve it warm...but the contest is 39 miles away so that isn't going to happen.  http://lemon-sugar.com/2013/03/irish-apple-cake.html 

At one point when you are making the sauce, you add the Jameson's and then set it on fire.  Oh my stars I thought that fire was NEVER going to go out.  My sugar never turned an amber color but it still tasted really really good.  Wish me luck :)  I'll keep you posted :)  I'm making the cake for the contest tomorrow night.  This one was just a test :)
